What Is a Root Canal?
Root canal therapy is a dental procedure used to treat infection or inflammation inside a tooth, typically caused by deep decay, cracks, trauma, or repeated dental treatments. This treatment can save your natural tooth and prevent the need for extraction.
At Boston Dental Center Abu Dhabi, our experienced dentists and endodontists perform painless root canal procedures using the latest technology to ensure precision, comfort, and long-term results.
During the procedure, the infected or damaged pulp (the soft tissue inside your tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels) is removed. The inside of the tooth is then cleaned, disinfected, and sealed to prevent further infection.
Do You Need Root Canal Treatment?
You may require root canal therapy if you’re experiencing one or more of the following symptoms: Severe, persistent toothache when chewing or applying pressure Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, even after the source is removed Darkening or discoloration of a tooth Tenderness or swelling in the surrounding gums A pimple-like bump on the gum (dental abscess) that keeps coming back Pain when tapping or touching the tooth If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to seek professional dental care immediately to prevent the infection from spreading or causing permanent tooth loss.
How Is a Root Canal Performed?
Step 1: Diagnosis
Digital X-rays are taken to assess the root canal shape and detect infection in the surrounding bone.
Step 2: Local Anesthesia and Isolation
The tooth is numbed and isolated with a rubber dam to keep it dry and bacteria-free.
Step 3: Access and Cleaning
A small opening (access cavity) is created in the crown of the tooth. The infected pulp is removed, and the canals are cleaned, shaped, and disinfected using precise rotary instruments.
Step 4: Sealing the Canals
The canals are filled with a biocompatible material (gutta-percha) and sealed to prevent re-infection. A temporary filling is placed to close the access hole.
Step 5: Final Restoration
In most cases, a dental crown is needed to restore the tooth’s structure and strength after root canal therapy. This is done at a follow-up visit.
